Altar Servers

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the highest form of worship humans ordinarily have access to.

Altar Servers assist all of the People of God to engage fully in this act of worship. They lead the processions with cross and candles. They assist the priest and deacon to prepare the altar for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. They assist the priest by holding the missal and by washing his hands in the Lavabo rite. They ring the bells to greet the Holy Spirit (epiklesis) and Christ's Real Presence at the Consecration.

The Mass, though, is not the only form of worship altar servers engage in, even gathered as a community. There are other liturgical and non-liturgical forms of worship, and altar servers often support these, also. You will see St Catherine's servers at Advent and Lenten prayers, at Confirmation ceremonies, Penance Services, and even some weddings and funerals..

Altar Servers become, in a real way, custodians of the sacred things  of the Church, as they reverently carry the candles, cross, and missal, bring the chalices, patens, ciboria, and linens to the altar, and together with the priests and deacons, receive the gifts of bread and wine that will become Christ's Body and Blood.

Young people of at least fourth-grade age may enroll as altar servers. We impose no maximum age, and some young people continue serving at the altar all the way through high school. St. Catherine’s has both male & female as well as some adult Altar Servers.

Altar Servers must go through a few hours of training, so that they can carry out their duties with confidence.

Deacon Dan coordinates the servers. To become a server, contact him at deacondan@sienachurch.org .
